Hormones and Your Brain; how hormones across the lifespan impact brain health and how to improve it

Despite being vital to half the world’s population, brain research into women’s health vastly lags behind where it needs to be. Only 0.5% of brain imaging studies investigate women’s health questions. Our hormones are constantly in flux; from the regular ups-and-downs of the menstrual cycle, to the introduction of external hormones during hormonal contraceptives, to the hormonal change in menopause. Researchers are now finally moving away from ‘bikini science’ and investigating how these changes in hormones influence brain health and help to explain associated symptoms, such as ‘brain fog’ during certain days of the menstrual cycle. This talk will cover what research has been done into the impact of hormones on brain health across the lifespan, what still needs to be done, and how to use this research to optimise your health and wellbeing.

Melissa Wright

Melissa is a researcher at Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) and is interested in how changes in hormones - such as oestrogen and testosterone - influence our brain and eye health. In particular, she is interested in under-researched groups and in promoting women's health in neuroscience; there's a lot of research left to do! Her work includes the menstrual cycle, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hormonal contraceptives ('the pill'), and hormone replacement therapy.
